Without a Doubt drops on March 7 — and to celebrate, she's hosting a series of online founder firesides.

Surbhi has an incredibly compelling founder story. If I had to boil it down to one sentence I’d say: she turned a teenage cancer scare into a company that was eventually acquired for $275M by Boston Scientific. But what that short summary misses is the fact that she is a true <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://paulgraham.com/guidetoinvestors.html/">cockroach. Despite hundreds of nos from investors and difficult clinical trials, she forged on, pivoted, and kept fighting until she succeeded.

Surbhi has historically been a fairly private person (she just started a <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://twitter.com/surbhisarnasf/">Twitter account two weeks ago!). But soon, you’ll get to read more of her story and hear the tactical advice she learned along the way.

You can pre-order the book <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/without-a-doubt-surbhi-sarna/1141652335https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/without-a-doubt-surbhi-sarna/1141652335/">here through 1/27 at a 25% discount, and it’ll arrive in time for Women’s History Month. We compiled a list of the questions they most frequently asked about startups, and created this Startups for Students Guide.

The guide is informed by hundreds of hours of talks, blog posts, and essays we’ve written for students who are interested in starting or working at startups – many of which can be found in the <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/library/">YC Library).

Below is the introduction, and you can read the full <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/library/D0-startups-for-students-guide/">Startups for Students Guide here.

INTRODUCTION

In his 2007 essay “<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://www.paulgraham.com/notnot.html/">Why to Not Not Start a Startup,” YC co-founder Paul Graham wrote about how common uncertainty was among people considering starting a company. “There's nothing wrong with being unsure,” he noted. “You’re part of a grand tradition.” When Y Combinator launched in 2005, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"http://www.paulgraham.com/mit.html/">starting a startup was an unusual career path for recent graduates. It was hard to be taken seriously by investors if you didn’t have an MBA or years of experience in business or tech. To get a sense of how many startups were in the world, look at TechCrunch in 2005. It published about 40 company launches per month, and YC itself only got a couple hundred applications for its first batches.

The world has changed since then. Today we get tens of thousands of applications per year. On any given day you can look on Product Hunt and see dozens of new companies launch. Taking a chance and starting a startup is not the foreign concept it once was. While it has become more common for people around the world to start startups, there are many more who could consider startups as an option. For example, lots of folks choose a career in finance or as an engineer at a big company without considering other options. Whether you know you want to become a founder or are more interested in finding a job at a startup, we want to equip you with the best resources for getting started.

In this guide, we’ll discuss why you should think about starting a startup and why you should consider not starting a startup. We’ll also talk about what you should do in college and walk-through some tips for applying to Y Combinator. And if it turns out being a founder isn’t for you, we’ll talk about how to choose the right company and the benefits of working at a startup.

<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.ycombinator.com/library/D0-startups-for-students-guide/">Read the Startups for Students Guide here.
","comment_id":"61f5f94feb74f90001a95776","feature_image":"/blog/content/images/2022/01/Startups-for-Students-Guide.png","featured":false,"visibility":"public","email_recipient_filter":"none","created_at":"2022-01-29T18:34:55.000-08:00","updated_at":"2022-02-01T16:22:58.000-08:00","published_at":"2022-01-18T09:00:00.000-08:00","custom_excerpt":"In the past two years, we’ve met over 6,000 students during our virtual outreach tours. Since 2014, the Female Founders Conference has helped women who want to start and run their own startups. We believe creating a platform where successful women can share their stories and advice with founders who are just getting started is one way to bring about even more successful women-led companies. Through the Future Founders Conference, we will evolve the event to bring together even more communities, like prospective Latinx founders and Black founders. Stay tuned!
\n
We need more women-founded startups, and we hope to see you on November 18. Not just for my executive team but for managers and their teams?
\n
Wade Foster, Zapier: I’d keep in mind task relevant maturity (a concept from <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.amazon.com/High-Output-Management-Andrew-Grove/dp/0679762884/">Andy Grove’s book High Output Management). When someone is good at something, you can go longer without check-ins. When someone is new to something you probably want more frequent check-ins. If my team was new to remote, I’d probably start with an AM and a PM check-in; then as we get more comfortable and have less frequent blockers, I’d scale the check-ins back.
\n
What we do at Zapier:
\n– Weekly: 1:1s, Staff Meetings and All Hands
\n– Monthly: OKR Reviews, OKR Planning
\n
Ian Tien, Mattermost: If your team is international and across multiple time zones, here is a detailed <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://handbook.mattermost.com/operations/operations/company-cadence/">handbook outlining how to approach company wide communication. To start off, it is important to record meetings and take anonymous Q&A feedback asynchronously, so if someone is not able to attend they are still on equal footing to interact.
\n
Nick Raushenbush, Shogun: When we were a smaller team we relied on ad hoc communication a lot more. Now we are more thoughtful with meeting structure. Monthly: Company-wide AMAs are a new thing, but so far we really like them. We’re planning for once a month but might drop to once a quarter based on feedback. Weekly: Team fireside chats for 30 minutes.
\n
During meetings and check-ins I always ask:
\n– How are you doing and feeling this week?
\n– What are your blockers?
\n– What can I do to empower you to hit your goals?
\n– Do you need time, budget, human resources?
\n– Do you see any systemic issues/problems with how the company or product are functioning?
\n– Any questions for me?
\n
Question: What do you do to keep culture alive when fully virtual and remote?
\n
Ben Congleton, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.olark.com//">Olark: It starts with empowering your team to have space to think about the culture and values they want to present. Here are guides that we put together:
\n
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://blog.olark.com/ultimate-guide-to-remote-office-parties/">Remote Office Parties
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://blog.olark.com/creating-remote-watercooler-moments/">Creating Watercooler Moments
\n
<a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://blog.olark.com/what-is-the-olark-retreat/">All Hands Retreat
\n
\n
Rajiv Ayyangar, Tandem: We interviewed 100 remote teams and wrote a rundown of tactics for building trust: <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://medium.com/tandem/how-to-build-psychological-safety-in-your-remote-team-part-i-d8fbb0ef7dc7/">How to Build Psychological Safety in your Remote Team.
\n
Nick Raushenbush, Shogun: Culture forms! <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://www.donut.com//">Donut is a great tool to introduce team members to each other.
\n
Question: We all know tools are important for remote work? How do you get people to actually use them?
\n
Darren Murph, GitLab: If you’re forced to be remote, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://about.gitlab.com/company/culture/all-remote/remote-work-emergency-plan/#minimize-your-tool-stack.\">minimize your tool stack; minimize the chaos. It’s a lot for people thrust into remote areas, so if you can avoid introducing a new tool at the same time, avoid that. If you must do it, create documentation first, so the tool roll-out happens only after people have read, end-to-end, why you’re doing it, how they’ll use it, what it replaces, etc. Documentation is critical to adoption.
\n
Ben Congleton, Olark: It is important to recognize that some business tools are critical while others are elective. The only tools that are company wide requirements are based on job function and team needs. For example, expectations are set around using Slack, Google Docs, Google Calendar and Zoom. Letting teams choose platforms and make tool decisions helps and benefits them directly.
\n
Wade Foster, Zapier: We don’t enforce tool usage all that tightly outside of Slack and Zoom. What we do have is expectations on reporting. So if you reported to me, we’d agree on output at the beginning of the week, and at the end of the week, you communicate the result. The tools are a means to get to that — use whatever helps you get it done.
\n
Question: What is the most important rule to follow as a remote team?
\n
Yura Riphyak, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://youteam.io//">YouTeam:It is extremely important to put everything in writing. Three reasons why:
\n
\n
The written form disciplines thought and forces you to keep it short.
\n
All communication gets saved with no extra effort. This proves vital in case you need to involve more stakeholders in the future or revisit decisions that have been made.
\n
Textual content is searchable. Yes, you can record Zoom meetings — but how many of those recordings will you actually watch?
\n
\n
Question: What do you think about increasing peer 1:1 interactions?
\n
For example:
\n– When assigning a project, the manager also assigns a peer to discuss/help at the start, middle, and end of the project (vs full pair programming/working).
\n– Encourage people to post office hours and list topics they’d like to help others do or learn. – Encourage or facilitate video chat amongst peers.
\n
Yura Riphyak, YouTeam: Like most of the other things about non-work communication, we are trying to be light on any kind of management-induced activities. This stuff should happen bottom-up, not top-down. People who work remotely develop a comparatively high level of self-sufficiency and also a strong sense of personal space. One thing we are doing is making sure everyone knows about the others’ hobbies and interests. For example, we have a chess group, skiing group, and book club.
\n
Rajiv Ayyangar, Tandem: At Tandem, we built rooms to allow for a virtual water cooler. Social proof (seeing that other people are talking) is a huge factor in whether teammates are willing to talk socially. A few factors that one could consider: Fun! If there’s a fun reason to talk, like a game you want to try or an icebreaker topic, that can help. Inviting vs. demanding. If you let people know you have office hours, or will be in a room/call during X-Y time, then it’s an invitation. If you say you’ll be video-calling random people, it’s demanding.
\n","comment_id":"1104237","feature_image":null,"featured":false,"visibility":"public","email_recipient_filter":"none","created_at":"2020-03-27T01:28:52.000-07:00","updated_at":"2021-10-20T10:52:49.000-07:00","published_at":"2020-03-27T01:28:52.000-07:00","custom_excerpt":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"custom_template":null,"canonical_url":null,"authors":[{"id":"61fe29e3c7139e0001a710a2","name":"Kat Mañalac","slug":"kat-manalac","profile_image":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/c15939b217561ebda4c129bfea5f65f3?s=512&d=mm&r=g","cover_image":null,"bio":"Kat is the Managing Outreach Officer at YC. This week, we talked to <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://greentiger.co//">GreenTiger.

    /n

For those of you who don’t know, if you’re a student, applying <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://blog.ycombinator.com/early-decision//">Early Decision to YC allows you to apply now for the summer batch.
\n
GreenTiger is an app that allows users to trade US stocks from India, commission-free. Tyler Burnam was starting his senior year at Dartmouth and Prateek Swain was starting his senior year at Princeton when they applied to YC. Both majored in Computer Science.
\n
How did you find out about Early Decision?
\nWe found out about Early Decision through a blog post a YC alum shared with us in September. We had been working on a product and getting advice from him. I personally thought it was too early to apply, but Tyler and Thomson (Framed W14) convinced me that it was the right thing to do.
\n
What convinced you to apply? Did Early Decision play a role?
\nEarly Decision played a big role since we were both evaluating our job offers and trying to evaluate starting a startup vs. the safety of big jobs (and the trap you can get in). Knowing that we got into YC early helped us stop worrying about college and jobs and focus on building our startup. Early Decision played a big role in alleviating the stress and hedging our risk.
\n
What was the most valuable aspect of YC?
\nThe people were the most valuable part. We got incredible advice from the partners, alums, and batchmates who helped us during the program in immeasurable ways. The entire social gamification process that happens during the batch really helps you push yourself to constantly do better. That helped us push through with our company.
\n
Would you encourage other recent grads to start a startup? To do Early Decision? Why or why not?
\nResounding yes to both. Early Decision not only helped us both take the plunge right out of college, but made us switch from a “college startup” mindset to actually treating this like our livelihood much earlier in the process. Beyond that, it was amazing to have a community of other Early Decision founders that we could connect with and get close to during the program. It was great to have a support network in place.
\n","comment_id":"1103972","feature_image":null,"featured":false,"visibility":"public","email_recipient_filter":"none","created_at":"2019-09-23T07:00:19.000-07:00","updated_at":"2021-10-20T10:53:30.000-07:00","published_at":"2019-09-23T07:00:19.000-07:00","custom_excerpt":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"custom_template":null,"canonical_url":null,"authors":[{"id":"61fe29e3c7139e0001a710a2","name":"Kat Mañalac","slug":"kat-manalac","profile_image":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/c15939b217561ebda4c129bfea5f65f3?s=512&d=mm&r=g","cover_image":null,"bio":"Kat is the Managing Outreach Officer at YC. For those of you who don’t know, if you’re a student, <a href=https://www.ycombinator.com/"https://blog.ycombinator.com/early-decision//">applying Early Decision to YC allows you to apply now for the summer batch.
\n
Wren makes it simple to offset your personal — or your company’s — carbon emissions. Landon, Ben and Mimi were starting their senior year at USC when they applied and were accepted to YC, Early Decision:
\n
How did you find out about Early Decision?
\nLandon saw it on Hacker News.
\n
What convinced you to apply?
\nWe always knew we wanted to apply to YC. We’d been reading Paul Graham’s essays for a few years and had heard glowing reviews from a few USC friends who went through YC (Deepika with Athelas S16 and Jackson with Demeanor in W19). The three of us had been working together for a while and looking for a program to really help us as we worked full time on our idea over the summer — and YC is the best of its kind.
\n
Did Early Decision play a role in your decision to apply?
\nEarly Decision played a huge role in keeping us focused on Skipper/Wren. Ben and Landon were going to graduate and started to feel the pressure of finding a real full time job. I don’t know if we’d be working on Wren if we hadn’t gotten in early.
\n
It didn’t really play a role in us deciding to apply, since we knew we would apply during the normal application cycle if we didn’t get in the first time. We didn’t even think we were going to get in through Early Decision, so it was a nice surprise to come out of our “practice application run” as part of the S19 batch. 🙂
\n
What was the most valuable aspect of YC?
\nThere were so many! The partners were so helpful and incredibly supportive, especially Gustaf. It was so cool walking into OH and having a partner say “I’ve been thinking about Wren and I think you should do X to fix Y.”
\n
The dinners were a great way to meet other teams and hear inspiring founders stories. Whenever Thursdays arrived I always got a boost of energy knowing that it was our YC day.
\n
It’s been amazing being with other founders going through the same challenges — pivots, hustling to get customers, etc. We’ve helped each other through launches and always cheer each other on.
\n
With Early Decision teams specifically, we weren’t really close at the start of the summer, but at some point we invited everyone over to our house for a BBQ (I think this was when we realized that all the teams were pivoting or had pivoted). We were all college-aged founders living in the South Bay and we really hit it off.
\n
Would you encourage other recent grads to start a startup? To do Early Decision? Why or why not?
\n100%. For someone who prefers doing high impact work on small teams, startups are a great way to learn a ton really fast. For me, building a startup is 1000 times more fun and fulfilling than a desk job could ever be. Applying early was just the cherry on top — as soon as we got in, all the stress from my parents and social pressure from friends to get a good internship vanished. The YC brand is great when you’re raising money, but it’s also great to convince your parents your startup is legit!
\n","comment_id":"1103948","feature_image":null,"featured":false,"visibility":"public","email_recipient_filter":"none","created_at":"2019-09-17T03:59:12.000-07:00","updated_at":"2021-10-20T10:53:34.000-07:00","published_at":"2019-09-17T03:59:12.000-07:00","custom_excerpt":null,"codeinjection_head":null,"codeinjection_foot":null,"custom_template":null,"canonical_url":null,"authors":[{"id":"61fe29e3c7139e0001a710a2","name":"Kat Mañalac","slug":"kat-manalac","profile_image":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/c15939b217561ebda4c129bfea5f65f3?s=512&d=mm&r=g","cover_image":null,"bio":"Kat is the Managing Outreach Officer at YC.
